Choosing a paper shredder

When you are at the office or at home, you often have the problem of how to destroy your private and sensitive documents. The easiest way to do that is using a paper shredders, a mechanical device that is used to cut paper into small unreadable pieces.

The most important features of a paper shredder are typically:
  • Size and shape of pieces the device produces
  • Security level
For size and shape, normally paper shredder produce two different outputs:
  • Strips (strip cut)
  • Fine particles (cross cut)
There are numerous different standards, for different levels of security:


  • Level P-1 = ≤12 mm wide strips of any length 
  • Level P-2 = ≤6 mm wide strips of any length 
  • Level P-3 = ≤2 mm wide strips of any length or ≤320 mm² particles (of any width) 
  • Level P-4 = ≤160 mm² particles with width ≤ 6 mm
  • Level P-5 = ≤30 mm² particles with width ≤ 2 mm 
  • Level P-6 = ≤10 mm² particles with width ≤ 1 mm 
  • Level P-7 = ≤5 mm² particles with width ≤ 1 mm
For the correct choice, you have to consider how many documents you have to destroy at anyone time.
